Links — Terms of Service
Version 2026-09-06 Effective from: 5 September 2026
These terms are an agreement between you and Leafbit Limited. They apply when you use the Links app. Please read them. If you do not agree to them, do not use Links.
We keep the version number above. When we change these terms we publish a new version and record the change at the bottom of this page.
1. The important one: Links is a counting aid, not tax advice
Links counts days. It does not decide where you are tax resident, and it cannot. Nothing in the app is tax advice, legal advice, or immigration advice, and nothing in it should be relied on as any of those.
This is not a formality. It is a description of what the app can and cannot know.
- The day thresholds in Links are estimates. Links ships a table of residency day thresholds for seventeen countries. Not one of them has been checked against that country's own law. The app labels these limits as estimates for that reason.
- Several countries do not test days the way Links counts them. Germany and Switzerland turn on an unbroken stay, which can run across a year end — Links counts a total inside one year instead. Portugal and New Zealand test any rolling twelve months, not the year Links counts. The United States weights the two previous years as well; Links counts only the current one. Japan has no 183-day test — its rule turns on domicile and a one-year presence concept. France and the Netherlands may have no day threshold at all — residence there turns on where your life is centred. The United Kingdom's real test depends on how many ties you have to the country, so the number of days that makes you resident is not one figure; it can be far fewer than the 183 days Links counts against.
- Every country outside that table gets a placeholder. The table covers seventeen countries. For anywhere else — Thailand, Mexico, Brazil, anywhere — Links shows a limit of 183 days over the calendar year. That is not that country's rule. It is a stand-in used because the app holds no rule at all for that country, and it appears on screen looking exactly like the seventeen. Treat any limit outside the seventeen as a number nobody chose.
- The day-counting setting does not move a residency total. Links can count a stay as both the day you arrive and the day you leave, as arrival days only, or as departure days only. Both is the default, and the choice moves the day counts in your timeline, the country summary and the CSV report, and any limit you set for yourself — including the way the planner projects a trip against one. It does not move the tax-residency limits — including the one for your home country — or the Schengen 90/180 count. Those always count both end days, whatever you have chosen, because how a legal threshold counts a day is that country's rule and not a preference. Where a country's own rule counts differently — the UK's midnight test ignores the day you fly out, the United States counts any part of a day — Links does not model that yet, and counting both ends is the widest of them, so where it is imprecise it warns you early rather than late.
- Every country also tests things Links cannot see. Where your home is, where your family lives, where you work, where your business interests sit, what you intended. A day count is one input among many, and often not the decisive one.
- Schengen is a border rule, not a tax rule. The 90/180 count in Links is our reading of the rule, applied to the record on your phone. Border officers apply the rule to their own records, and theirs are the ones that count.
So: use Links to keep track, and talk to a qualified tax adviser before you make a decision that depends on the answer. Do not book a flight, sign a lease, leave a country, or file a return on the strength of a number in this app alone. If Links and your adviser disagree, your adviser is right.
We are not liable for tax, penalties, interest, fines, refused entry, or any other consequence of a decision you made because of what Links showed you. See section 11.
2. Who provides Links
Links is provided by Leafbit Limited, a company registered in England and Wales.
- Company number: 16583520
- Registered office: 8-10 South Street, Epsom, Surrey, KT18 7PF, United Kingdom
- Contact: privacy@leafbit.uk
"We", "us" and "our" mean Leafbit Limited. "You" and "your" mean the person using Links.
3. What Links is
Links records which country you are in, works out how many days you have spent in each, and shows those totals against day limits — Schengen 90/180, and per-country residency thresholds you can adjust or switch off.
It does this by taking occasional location readings in the background, turning each one into a country, and building your stays from that record. You can edit any stay, add stays by hand, and export your day totals as a CSV file.
What Links is not: it is not a tax return, an immigration filing, a border record, an accountant, or a substitute for one. It does not talk to any tax authority or border agency, and no authority has approved, checked or endorsed what it produces.
Links is still in testing. It is distributed through TestFlight and has not been publicly released. Expect defects, expect changes, and do not treat it as a finished product.
4. Your account
You need an account to use Links. You can create one with an email address and a password, or by signing in with Google.
You must be 18 or over to use Links. If you are under 18, do not create an account. If we learn that an account belongs to someone under 18, we will close it.
You are responsible for keeping your password safe and for everything done through your account. Tell us at privacy@leafbit.uk if you think someone else has access to it.
Give us accurate details when you sign up, and keep them accurate. One person, one account.
5. Tracking is not guaranteed to be complete
This is a promise we cannot make, so we are not making it.
- Background location depends on permissions you control. Links needs iOS location access set to "Always" to record anything while the app is closed. You can change or revoke that permission at any time, and iOS itself may ask you to re-confirm it and drop it to "While Using". When that happens Links can only check in while it is open, so any day you spend with the app closed goes unrecorded. The app notices and tells you — Today carries a banner naming the cause — but it cannot count days it never saw.
- iOS decides when the app runs. Background work is deferred, throttled, and sometimes not delivered at all — by Low Power Mode, by a flat battery, by a phone that is switched off or in airplane mode, or for no reason we are given. Gaps happen.
- Gaps may be filled with an estimate. Where Links is confident, it fills a gap automatically — for example, where you were in the same country either side of it. Where it is not confident, it counts the gap at the worst case and flags it, and asks you what happened. These are guesses. They are yours to correct, and every one of them is editable.
- Turning a country into a location needs Apple. Links asks Apple's geocoding service which country a coordinate is in. When you are offline, or when Apple's service does not answer, a reading waits. Once it has waited more than seven days it is deleted — the next time you open the app, not on a timer — and that reading is lost.
- A failed account deletion leaves background tracking switched off. Deleting your account stops background tracking before it deletes anything, and the app does not turn it back on if the deletion then fails. Links goes on checking in while it is open, but records nothing in the background until you switch tracking on again in Settings → Location tracking. Today shows a "Tracking is off" banner until you do. Section 9 sets out the failures this can follow.
Keep your own records. Boarding passes, passport stamps, hotel bookings and bank statements are evidence. A number in Links is not. If your day count ever matters to a tax authority or a border officer, you will need the evidence, and Links is not it.
6. Your data is your responsibility
Links counts what it is given. You are responsible for the accuracy of what goes in and for checking what comes out.
That means: review the stays Links derives, correct the ones that are wrong, fill in the ones it missed, and check the totals before you rely on them. If a stay is wrong, every count built on it is wrong too, and Links has no way of knowing.
Your dates and your edits are yours. We do not check them and we do not verify them. Your travel record has no free-text box — countries come from a list, dates from a calendar — so the only words in it are the ones the app writes about its own guesses. The name you can add in Settings and the email you sign in with are the only free text Links stores.
How we handle your personal data — including what leaves your phone, what does not, and the rights you have over it — is set out in our privacy notice, not here.
7. Acceptable use
Use Links for your own day counting. Do not:
- use it to break the law, or to help anyone else break the law, including immigration and tax law;
- create an account for someone else, or share your account;
- try to get into anyone else's data, or into parts of our systems you have not been given access to;
- attack, overload, probe or interfere with the service, or with the phones and accounts of other people using it;
- copy, resell, or rent out Links, or take it apart to build a competing product, except where the law says you may.
If you do any of this we may suspend or close your account.
8. Availability
We will try to keep Links working. We do not promise that it will.
There is no uptime commitment. Sync depends on services we do not run, on your network, and on Apple's operating system. Links may be unavailable for maintenance, because something has broken, or because a service it depends on has stopped. We may change how features work, or remove them, and we may stop providing Links altogether.
If we decide to shut Links down, we will give you reasonable notice and time to export your data, unless we are prevented from doing so by law or by circumstances outside our control.
Links is currently provided free of charge. If we introduce paid features we will tell you clearly before you are asked to pay for anything.
9. Ending this agreement
You can stop at any time. Delete your account in Settings, or simply stop using the app.
Deleting your account happens in a fixed order, and the order matters, because a failure part-way through leaves you part-way through. Your stays and your check-ins go first, and we ask the server to confirm those are really gone before anything else happens. Your profile record — your settings, and the details you entered about yourself — is deleted immediately afterwards, with no confirming check of its own. Only then do we delete your sign-in account. Only then does the app wipe the copy on your phone.
So if something fails:
- If the sweep of your synced data does not finish, we stop there. Your sign-in account and the copy on your phone are untouched, though some of your synced data may already have gone. Try again.
- If deleting your sign-in account fails — for security it sometimes requires you to have signed in recently, and the app will say so — your synced data has already been deleted. Your account still exists and your phone still holds its copy. Sign in again, and repeat the deletion to finish it.
Either failure also leaves background tracking switched off. Links stops recording before it starts deleting, and it does not start again by itself when the deletion fails. Today shows a "Tracking is off" banner until you turn it back on in Settings, and until you do, Links only checks in while the app is open. See section 5.
This cannot be undone. Export anything you want to keep first.
Deleting the app from your phone also removes the copy held there.
We can end it too. We may suspend or close your account if you break these terms, if we are required to by law, or if we stop providing Links. Where we reasonably can, we will tell you first and give you a chance to get your data out. Where the breach is serious, we may act immediately.
10. Changes to these terms
We may change these terms — because the app changes, because the law changes, or because something here turned out to be unclear.
When we do, we publish a new version with a new version number and a new effective date, and we list what changed at the bottom of this page. For changes that matter to you, we will tell you in the app before they take effect.
Carrying on using Links after a new version takes effect means you accept it. If you do not accept it, delete your account.
A material change will be shown to you in the app, with a link to read what changed. It will not lock you out of Links or stop your data syncing while you read it — you may be relying on your day count somewhere in the middle of a trip, and a contract term is not a reason to take that away from you. That in-app notice has not shipped yet; until it does, the version published at links.leafbit.uk is the record.
We do not yet keep a record of which version you accepted. When we add one, it will store a version and a date and nothing else.
11. Our liability
Nothing in these terms limits our liability for death or personal injury caused by our negligence, for fraud or fraudulent misrepresentation, or for anything else that cannot be limited by law. If you are a consumer, nothing here affects your legal rights.
Subject to that:
- We are not liable for tax outcomes. We are not liable for any tax, penalty, interest, surcharge, fine, refused entry, refused visa, overstay, or professional fee arising from a day count, a limit, a warning, or the absence of a warning in Links. Section 1 explains why: the app cannot determine your residency and does not try to.
- We are not liable for a record that is incomplete. Section 5 explains how tracking can miss days. We are not liable for the consequences of days Links did not record, gaps it estimated, or readings that were lost.
- We are not liable for indirect loss — lost profits, lost business or lost opportunity — to the extent the law allows.
- A cap on everything else. Our total liability to you for all other claims arising out of or in connection with Links is limited to £1,000, or the total amount you paid us for Links in the twelve months before the claim, whichever is greater. Links is free today, so for most people that cap is £1,000; it is written this way so that it still means something if you are ever paying for it.
Links is provided "as is". Beyond what these terms say and what the law requires, we give no warranties — in particular, none that the counts are accurate, that the thresholds are correct, or that the app is fit for any particular purpose.
12. Governing law
These terms, and any dispute arising from them or from your use of Links, are governed by the law of England and Wales, and the courts of England and Wales have non-exclusive jurisdiction. That follows from where Leafbit Limited is registered, which section 2 sets out.
If you are a consumer resident somewhere else, this does not take away the protection of any law of your own country that you cannot be deprived of by agreement, and you may be able to bring proceedings in your own courts.
13. Everything else
- The whole agreement. These terms are the whole agreement between us about Links. Our privacy notice is not part of this agreement: it explains how we handle your data, and there is nothing in it for you to agree to.
- If a clause fails. If any part of these terms is found to be unenforceable, the rest still applies.
- Delay is not waiver. If we do not enforce something straight away, we have not given up the right to enforce it later.
- Transfer. You may not transfer your rights under these terms to anyone else. We may transfer ours — for example if our business is sold — and we will tell you if we do.
- Third parties. Nobody other than you and us has any right to enforce these terms.
14. Contact us
Questions about these terms, about your account, or about your data:
That is the only address, and a person reads it. There is no separate support queue to be passed along to. If you would rather write, our registered office is 8-10 South Street, Epsom, Surrey, KT18 7PF, United Kingdom — but email reaches us faster.
